Raising Awareness- Why Women Stay in Abusive Relationships The prevailing myth that persists about domestic violence, even in today's society, is the notion which is implicit in the question "Well, why doesn't she just leave him?" that the abused woman is to some extent responsible for her own misfortune. Many people still hold on to the belief that men are only violent when they are provoked or encouraged in some way. It stands to reason, according to this argument, that women deserve to be abused.
