Raising Awareness-Why Women Stay in Abusive Relationships

Raising Awareness- Why Women Stay in Abusive Relationships The prevailing myth that persists about domestic violence, even in today's society, is the notion which is implicit in the question "Well, why doesn't she just leave him?" that the abused woman is to some extent responsible for her own misfortune. Many people still hold on to the belief that men are only violent when they are provoked or encouraged in some way. It stands to reason, according to this argument, that women deserve to be abused. Others maintain that women who stay in violent relationships must enjoy being abused. Worse than promoting ideas like these, society is guilty of ignoring the subject of domestic violence altogether as "a private matter between man and wife." Violence Toward Men Although male victimization is an important issue that needs to be addressed, it is of significance and worth remembering the disparity between male and female physical strength and the unequal po...

Everything I Wish I'd Known Before Starting Therapy

Everything I Wish I'd Known Before Starting Therapy Hannah Ewens HANNAH EWENS Sep 12 2017, 8:30am Some advice on how to make the most of your talking therapy if you’ve never had it before. At the age of 25, I've been in therapy for a perfect decade. That includes a child psychologist, various bouts of NHS cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and psychotherapy, and various private psychotherapists. If this was a marriage, it'd be a tin-slash-aluminium anniversary – a metal that supposedly represents how a successful partnership can be bent without being broken. Which is fitting, considering I've had phases of thinking of canning it altogether, convinced it isn't working, before crawling back with my tail between my legs. At different points my therapy has been for anxiety, depression, PMDD, psychosis and periods of dissociation, mania or eating issues, as well as other things that have fallen short of clear categorisation. I absolutely can't claim to und...

Hokusai Says by Roger S Keyes

Hokusai says Look carefully. He says pay attention, notice. He says keep looking, stay curious. He says there is no end to seeing. He says Look Forward to getting old. He says keep changing; you just get more who you really are. He says get stuck, accept it, repeat yourself as long as it’s interesting. He says keep doing what you love. He says keep praying. He says every one of us is a child, every one of us is ancient, and every one of us has a body. He says every one of us is frightened. He says every one of us has to find a way to live with fear. He says everything is alive – shells, buildings, people, fish, mountains, trees. Wood is alive. Water is alive. Everything has its own life. Everything lives inside us. He says live with the world inside you. He says it doesn’t matter if you draw, or write books. It doesn’t matter if you saw wood, or catch fish. It doesn’t matter if you sit at home and stare at the ants on your veranda or the shadows of the tree...
